Georgia Home Inspector wants people to know about the dangers of radon

I just wanted everyone to know the dangers of radon. Most people have no clue about radon and in this instance what you don’t know can kill you. Most people who die because of lung cancer that have never smoked and never been around the second hand smoke has been because of radon gas. You can’t smell it, you can’t see it, it is an unnoticed silent deadly gas. I personally wouldn’t live in a home that has not had a radon test. We suggest that every person that gets a home inspection done by us has a radon test performed at the same time. The type of radon test that we preform is a continous radon monitor that takes a reading every hour over a 48 hour period. Call us today at 404-788-2851 to schedule your radon test.

Great Home Inspection Tip

Find out how simply lowering your grade around your house can help with selling your home faster and with less hassel or why you want to maintain the grade level and what this prevents….

I failed to use my own tip of the month

Well folks, I know you have all heard the saying “Do as I say, don’t do as I do”.  I gave everyone a great tip of the month and then just this past week I had to repair our shower faucet.  It was about a week in between taking it apart and finding the parts and getting it put back together.  And I DIDN’T take a picture.  Needless to say when I put it back together, I missed one step and had water running down the inside of the wall and my wife standing there laughing and asking me “Where was your camera?”

Great Tip of the Month For Georgia Home Owners

I have always been amazed at someone who could tear something apart and put it back What along Atlanta home inspection listtogether again without having any parts left over.  My brother in law who lives right here in Canton is someone who can take any piece of equipment apart and put it back together in working order without any trouble at all.  But for those of us who seem to be left scratching our heads and wondering why we have pieces left over here is a great idea to help solve the problem.

Use your digital camera to take pictures of the process while barn picturestaking the item apart.  This way if time lapses or you can’t remember exactly which order Water faucet repairthings go in, you have your digital pictures as your memory.

I did this with a barn that was located in Cumming, GA that we decided to tear down and rebuild on our property up in Canton.  Needless to say, without the pictures, there is no telling what my barn would have looked like. It took me quite a while to rebuild it and there is a shed area that I still need to get back on.  It’s a good thing I have the pictures.

Are Home Inspections Worth the Money?

I was surfing the web and found this interesting site www.trulia.com for real estate professionals and it is where you can ask a question and the real estate professionals will answer the questions.  Pretty neat.  I was looking to see if there was any home inspectors on the site and so I did a search and the first thing that came up was the above question.  I thought it would be interesting to see what the pros had to say.  I checked and there was 27 answers and each one was a yes, it is worth the money.  I thought it was neat to see a lot of them say that a pre-listing inspection is a great idea also.  Here is the link to that question http://www.trulia.com/voices/Home_Buying/Are_home_inspections_worth_the_money_-4463

Could You have Radon? Get a Radon inspection Done.

- My Neighbor didn’t so probably not.  I wouldn’t count on this being true.

I do radon testing and most people don’t know what it is nor do they know the risk that it causes.  Radon is a cancer-causing natural radioactive gas that you can’t see, smell or taste. Its presence in your home can pose a danger to your family’s health. The good news is that Radon Gas can be detected with a simple test and if the home you’re purchasing has elevated levels of Radon Gas, it can be easily fixed. The key to the issue is Getting A Radon Test. Then you know if the problem exists and if so, to what degree.

I did a radon test using a continuous monitor will that test every hour on the hour for 48 hours on my own home and the test came back with low levels.  I thought great, we don’t have to do anything about it and we also don’t have to worry.  My wife’s parents live right behind us so I decided I would go over and test their house; you want to protect those you love right?  I did the test and most people would think they would test about the same because they live right behind us.  Their test came back with levels at 13.8 and because it was so high I did the test again.  Both of them smoke, so their house needed mediation immediately.  There is no telling how long that the levels have been that high.  Both of our homes are on a basement and this really reiterates the message that all homes should be tested.   And it doesn’t matter if your home is built on a basement, crawlspace or a slab, this deadly gas can seep in and it doesn’t matter if it’s brand new construction or a 50 year old home.

It’s estimated that Radon Gas kills 21,000 Americans each and every year. As a matter of fact, Radon Gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer, only second to cigarette smoking.  And if you smoke this number is even greater.
